ball PROJECT PURPOSES
  To eliminate obstructions cases by railway facilities in metropolitan areas and alleviate traffic bottlenecks in the city, reduce noise pollution, improve environmental quality, and integrate the Taipei mass rapid transit system (MRT) as well as the High-Speed Rail (HSR), Taipei Railway Underground Project (TRUP) was aggressively initiated.
ball BACKGROUND
  The Engineering Office of Taipei Railway Underground Project (TRUPO) was set up in July 1983 under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). TRUPO is mainly responsible for the implementation of Railway Underground Projects.
  As a result of the promotion of the office, the title has been changed into Railway Reconstruction Bureau (RRB) since January 1, 2002.
ball PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
  The first, second and the third stages of TRUPO connect Wanhua with Huashan (comprising of Taipei Main Station) and Huashan with Sungshan, as well as the third stage of Wanhua to Banciao Railway Underground Project have already been completed. In coordination with the development of Nangang Economic and Trading Park as well as prosperity for the eastern Taipei city, the fourth stage, the Nangang Extension Project (19.4km long; total budget US$2.32 billion), began on November 1, 1998. The construction of this fourth section will be completed in Aug. 2011. For the present, it is proceeding to the detailed design, peripheral construction works and main construction projects.
  The integrated planning of Kaohsiung Railway Underground Project has been completed and already approved by Executive Yuan. In cooperation with the Kaoshiung Mass Rapid Transit System as well as integrate-Stations of Kaohsiung & Zuoying for High Speed Rail, the RRB is currently proceeding to the construction of MRT R11 Station and Zuoying Station those have been completed ahead as well.
To promote the projects of “Transformation of the Taiwan Railway into a MRT-type railroad,?some of projects have been approved by Executive Yuan as follow :
1. the Kaohsiung-PingtungChaojhou Electrification Project : 18km long; total budget
   US$0.27 billion; project schedule 5years.
2. Railway Grade Separating Projects : Including
   (1) Taichung elevated : 21.19km long; total budget US$0.87 billion; project schedule 8years.
   (2) Yuanlin elevated : 3.98km long; total budget US$0.12 billion; project schedule 7 years.
   (3) Kaohsiung underground : 9.75km long; total budget US$1.62 billion; project schedule 9 years.
3.Branch Function Projects :
   (1) Hinchun-Neiwan : 11.28km long; total budget US$0.19 billion; project schedule 5 years.
   (2) Tainan-Shalun : 6.4km long; total budget US$0.15 billion; project schedule 5 years.

  Nowadays, RRB is preceding the works of planning and detail design for Chiayi elevated (8.2 km long; total budget US$0.42 billion; project schedule 7 years) and Tainan underground project (7.55 km long; total budget US$0.90 billion; project schedule 8 years).
Moreover, we carry on with the East Railway Continued Improvement Project, from 2003 to 2008, to the benefits of the project including in removing 3 railways crossing, reducing road traffic blocks causing by railway passing, and promoting the value of the land of metropolis and the place to be prosperous.
