Approved by the National Development Council,Feasibility Study on Converting Hualien–Taitung Line to Double Track
Hualien–Taitung Line to Double Track The Hualien–Taitung railway line is moving towards another new milestone! On February 21st of this year (2017), the National Development Council passed the ' Hualien - Taitung District Railway Double Track Electrification Project Feasibility Study'. The project will convert approximately 107.8 kilometers of the single-track railway between Hualien Station on the Hualien - Taitung Line and Zheben Station on the South-Link Line to double track. The project's total cost is about NT$41.067 billion, and the goal is to complete integration planning by the end of 2018, begin construction by 2021, and complete construction of the full line by June 2026.
Dr. Hsu Ming-hsin, Deputy Minister of the National Development Council, said that this forward-looking item of infrastructure has its importance and urgency. It is expected to improve the present ticket-purchasing difficulties for train journeys on the Hualien - Taitung region, which is great news for the people of the region.
Railway Reconstruction Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications said the total length of the Hualien–Taitung Line was approximately 162 kilometers in length, and the current bottleneck sections have already been converted to double track. However, 107.8 km of single-line track remains in operation. The shortcoming of single-line track is that trains need to stop, to allow one train to pass before another train, traveling in the other direction, is able to able to proceed. In case of accident, the train service is forced to stop. After the entire Hualien–Taitung Line has been converted to double track, peak hour services will be increased to five, and the average total number of services can be doubled. This will not only can increase traffic amount and stability, but also speed, effectively improving the travel needs of the Hualien - Taitung region, and it will also be able to promote regional economic development.
