'Tainan Urban District Railway Underground Project' Gets Underway,Minister Hochen Tan presided over the opening ceremony on March 15th of this year (2017)
Tainan Project Minister of Transportation and Communications Hochen Tan, Tainan City Mayor William Lai, Acting Director General of the Railway Reconstruction Bureau Allen Hu, elected representatives, local citizens, and so on, took part in the ground-breaking ceremony for the C214 tender 'South Tainan Station Section Underground Project' on March 15, 2017.
The northern end of Tainan Urban District Railway Underground Project's planning range begins on the south side of the Zhonghua Road Bridge at the southern end of Tainan City's Yongkang Station, and it extends south to approximately 2 kilometers south of Shengchan Road, a total length of 8.23 km. In addition to converting the existing Tainan Station to underground, the line will also feature two new underground commuter stations at Linsen Station and South Tainan Station. Its total budget is NT$29.36 billion, and it is expected to be completed by June 2024. The Railway Reconstruction Bureau said that the project's completion will see the elimination of 23 railway level crossings points. This includes nine level crossing roads, eight subways, two railway bridge box culverts and four pedestrian overpasses. After its completion and opening to traffic, it will be able to solve such traffic congestion problems as those caused by road vehicles having to stop in front of railway line level crossings, and completely eliminate the incidence of traffic accidents at railway level crossings, thus greatly enhancing the quality of the line. Also, the development of Tainan Station will integrate the station's national monument preservation. This will recreate an era of prosperity in the station's surroundings, injecting a new lease of life into the old urban area.
Acting Director General of the Railway Reconstruction Bureau Allen Hu stated that after the project was submitted to the Executive Yuan for approval in September 2009, the Bureau has actively carried out various items of preparatory work, including project planning, design, urban planning changes, land acquisition and relevant engineering contracting operations. The civil engineering for the underground project consists of four tender stages; this (C214) tender engineering is the most southern section of the project. Apart from excavation work for the project's access roads and tunnel sections, there will also be a newly-constructed underground commuter station at South Tainan Station. Currently, engineering design has already been completed, as well as urban planning change operations. When Minister Hochen delivered his address, he gave his wishes for the project's trouble-free construction, the safety of personnel involved and anticipated the successfully completion of the underground project and its opening to rail traffic, to facilitate the improvement of Tainan City's transport and provide the most convenient transport services.
