Keelung Railway Station's Southern Station Square,Ever More Beautiful as Night Deepens A Romantic New Look
Keelung Station The Southern Station Square of the new Keelung Railway Station was officially opened on October 2nd, 2017. Fan, Chih-Ku, Political Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Keelung City Mayor Lin Yu-chang, Railway Reconstruction Bureau Vice Director-General Wu Sheng-yuan, Taiwan Railways Administration Director-General Hsien-Lin Ho, and various public opinion representatives co-hosted the opening ceremony of Keelung Railway Station’s Southern Station Square on the morning of that day. After the opening of the brand new Southern Station Square, there will be more space for civic activities during the day and a variety of suitable lighting at night, which will create a different and more romantic atmosphere.
In his address, Deputy Director Fan, Chih-Ku emphasized that Keelung City has put a great deal of effort into improving the traffic facilities and urban renewal around Keelung's new station. The completion of the Keelung Railway Station’s Southern Station Square project today will stimulate the early realization of the 'Keelung Railway Station Urban Renewal Project' blueprint, and will bring a completely new look to Keelung city center, implementing the government's commitment to enhancing Keelung's infrastructure.
Railway Reconstruction Bureau Vice Director-General Wu Sheng-yuan noted that Keelung Railway Station's Southern Station Square project adopted a novel concept design, in which the station's terminal hall platform extends towards Xiao 4th Road. With the removal of the Zhongshan overpass, the field of view now takes in the Ocean Plaza. Furthermore, the large metal roof panels of the construction, in addition to providing shelter from rain, also create a large umbrella image at the entrance to Keelung City, warmly welcoming tourists from all over Taiwan and around the world to visit Keelung for sightseeing.
The ground floor of the new square connects the old station to the parking lot (north-south orientation) as well as to Xiao 4th Road and Zhongshan 1st Road (east-west orientation). The route of travelers taking trains who enter the hall of the southern terminus is integrated with the vending space catering to travelers, or their convenience of use. The outdoor area features plants and outdoor seating facilities, and is complemented with a variety of garden landscape lighting and the LED lights of the Southern Station curtain wall, which make Keelung's new station ever more beautiful as night deepens, displaying another bright spot of brilliance.
In addition, large eaves have been installed on the square for the taxi stand area and the compact car temporary parking area, to endow the waiting space with a more intimate atmosphere. It is hoped that the opening of Southern Station Square will drive land renewal and urban renewal development along the perimeter of the station, enabling Keelung to move progressively closer to its target of becoming an international city.
